At The Sargam Project, we celebrate the intricate tapestry of Indian performing arts. One of the most beautiful threads in this tapestry is dance—but in Indian tradition, dance isn’t just about movement. It is layered, philosophical, and full of rasa (emotion). To truly understand Indian dance, we must first understand its three foundational elements: Nrit, Nritya, and Natya.
Natya is the grand combination of Nrit and Nritya, often seen in dance-dramas or theatrical performances. It includes dialogue, acting, costumes, music, and dance to narrate a story. It is rooted in the ancient tradition of Natyashastra by Bharat Muni and is essentially dance-theatre.
✨ A Kuchipudi ballet depicting the Ramayana, with characters, narrative flow, and emotional highs and lows—that’s Natya.
At The Sargam Project, many of our performances—be it on stage or in street corners—draw from this triad. Whether it’s a Dastangoi echoing Natya or a classical performance exploring Nritya, understanding these terms allows us to appreciate the depth and diversity of Indian performance traditions.
Let’s not just watch the art. Let’s feel its heartbeat
