At The Sargam Project, we celebrate the intricate tapestry of Indian performing arts. One of the most beautiful threads in this tapestry is dance—but in Indian tradition, dance isn’t just about movement. It is layered, philosophical, and full of rasa (emotion). To truly understand Indian dance, we must first understand its three foundational elements: Nrit, Nritya, and Natya.
Nrit is the technical aspect of dance. Think of it as the grammar of movement—a sequence of rhythmic steps and patterns performed without expressing any particular emotion or story. These movements are precise, often abstract, and highlight the dancer’s command over rhythm (taal), speed (laya), and posture (ang).
✨ Imagine a Bharatanatyam dancer performing intricate footwork to a rhythmic beat—no storyline, no expressions—just pure, mesmerizing movement. That’s Nrit.
At The Sargam Project, many of our performances—be it on stage or in street corners—draw from this triad. Whether it’s a Dastangoi echoing Natya or a classical performance exploring Nritya, understanding these terms allows us to appreciate the depth and diversity of Indian performance traditions.
Let’s not just watch the art. Let’s feel its heartbeat
